About Scar Revision

Scarring is a natural part of the healing process that occurs as the skin repairs after an injury and inflammation. Common causes include accidents, burns, cuts, surgeries or sequelae of disease processes like acne. Scarring can cause embarrassment and negatively impact self-image and confidence.

Wound healing is a complex process that matures over an entire year. Genetics, age, skin color, and medications can affect healing. After an injury, the body replaces damaged tissue with scar tissue that is thicker and less flexible. The surface texture and edges may remain irregular, depressed or raised.

Treatment options depend on the type, size, depth and location of scars. Options include microneedling, steroid injections, scar creams and gels, chemical peels, dermabrasion, acne scar surgery, CO2 laser resurfacing, and non-ablative lasers. Often the best results come from a combination of treatments.

FAQ

Common Questions

What are the main types of scars?

There are three main types: Atrophic scars result from collagen loss and are typically indented (icepick, boxcar, or rolling scars from acne). Hypertrophic scars are raised, red and firm within the wound borders. Keloid scars develop from excessive scar tissue and extend beyond the original wound. Hyperpigmentation is also a type of scarring where the area is darker than surrounding skin.

What treatments are available for scars?

Microneedling stimulates natural healing to remodel scars. Steroid injections soften and flatten raised scars. CO2 laser resurfacing vaporizes damaged skin layers to induce new skin formation. Chemical peels and dermabrasion remove surface layers. Acne scar surgery can raise or break up scar tissue. During your consultation, Dr. White will formulate a personalized treatment plan.
