Treatments for Acne

Acne is characterized by blackheads, whiteheads, red inflamed bumps called papules and pustules, and in severe cases, deep-seated nodules and cysts. It is caused by increased sebum or oil production, clogged hair follicles, altered bacteria, and hormones. The T-zone (forehead, nose, chin) is frequently affected, though acne can also appear on the back, neck, chest, shoulders, upper arms, and buttocks.

The RW Dermatology team will tailor treatments to meet your needs, which may include topical and oral medications, chemical peels, skincare products, microneedling, and laser therapy. We also offer Forever Clear BBL — a clear skin laser treatment utilizing BroadBand Light technology to eliminate acne.

The most important action you can take is to start treatment early to prevent side effects and scarring. Whether your acne is mild or severe, our board-certified team has the expertise to help you achieve clear, healthy skin.

FAQ

Common Questions

Who is at risk for acne?

Acne affects men and women of all races and ethnicities. 85% of acne sufferers are teens and young adults. Pre-adolescents can develop acne when there is an increase in hormones that trigger oil production. Adult acne primarily affects women in their thirties and older.

What causes acne?

Acne commonly begins around puberty when androgen hormones increase, stimulating enlargement of sebaceous glands and increased oil production. Excess oil with increased skin cell turnover blocks the sebaceous gland duct and hair follicle, resulting in whiteheads and blackheads. Additional causes include insulin resistance and hormone imbalances such as PCOS.

What treatments are available?

Treatments include topical and oral antibiotics, anti-inflammatory agents, anti-hormonal agents, retinoids, chemical peels (glycolic and salicylic acid), oral contraceptives for hormonal cases, isotretinoin for severe nodular/cystic acne, phototherapy, and Forever Clear BBL laser treatment.
